Open Question: Determining if a function is even, odd, or neither?

you just need to answer the question of whether
f(-x)= - f(x) if so then odd;
f(-x)=f(x) if so then even
otherwise neither

Here f(-x)=1/(-2x)= - 1/2x = - f(x); so odd

when finding zeros from a factored equation...?

lets say i'm finding the zeros... and my factored equation is -1(x+6)(x-2)
i know x=-6,2. But what about the -1 out front?
or if I have
3(x+2)(x-3) ==>what about the 3 out front?
do those numbers count as a zero?

Help with Cellular Automata?

In one-dimensional cellular automata, each rule is a static eight-bit number that represents each three-cell combination that produces an "alive" state. In two-dimensional cellular automata, the rule can be a 512-bit number because the nine-cell neighborhood has 512 possible combinations, and each bit in the rule's number determines whether each combination produces an alive (1) or dead (0) state. Because of such complexity and the symmetry of the 2-D rules, the representation is simplified by stating how many cells in a neighborhood cause a cell to be born, to continue living, or to die. In the case of Conway's Game of Life, the rule is 3 neighbors must be alive in order for a cell to come to life, and an alive cell with 2 or 3 alive neighbors will remain alive in the next generation.
I want to find out the 512-bit number that represents this rule. Assuming the middle cell represents the one's place value in each 9-bit combination (it represents the two's place value in one-dimensional CA), what would the rule be? I can't find an online calculator that handles 512-bit numbers, but I believe I've found the formula for it.
3*Sigma(2^(2^a+2^b+2^c)) + Sigma(2^(1+2^d+2^e)),
With 1<=aAnd 1<=d
Multiplying the first half of the equation by 3 is the same as writing it as Sigma(2^(2^a+2^b+2^c) + 2^(1+2^a+2^b+2^c)), which covers three alive neighbors surrounding a cell, whether it is dead or alive. The second half of the equation covers an alive cell with exactly two alive neighbors.
Keep in mind, I've never been formally educated on sigma notation, so I don't know for certain if this covers any combinations I didn't intend or doesn't cover enough. If someone can tell me if it's the correct formula, I'd be very grateful.

What does interpret the value of the average rate of change mean?

This is my problem and my math book isn't giving me any information about what this question means..
"The graph shows the population P in a small industrial city from 1950-2000. The variable X represents the number of years since 1950."
Graph below points are on X = 20,25,40,50 ; Y= 40,50,40,20
50-
40-
30-
20-
10-
0 ____________________________
--------------10 20 30 40 50
(a) Determine the intervals on which the function P is increasing and on which it is decreasing.
My answer= Increasing [0,20] [20,25] ; Decreasing [25,40] [40,50]
(b) What was the average rate of change of P between X=20 and X=40 ?
My answer = 40 - 40 / 40-20 = 0/20 = 0
(c) Interpret the value of the average rate of change that you found in part (b)
** This is where I am lost. I'm not sure what the question is actually asking, I've done some searching on the internet about the value of the average rate of change, although I think I'm either finding the wrong thing, or not quite catching the concept. Intuitively I consider the fluctuation between the two intervals, but as the past has shown me, intuition and math don't necessarily make good partners ;X

Why is the answer 2y/x^2 and not 2x^-2*y?

x^(-a) = 1/x^a
x^(-2) = 1/x^2
Therefore, 2y/x^2 and 2x^(-2)y are equal
But often, you will be asked to use positive exponents,
so it's best to answer 2y/x^2

How do you solve 7+3t over 4 =-t over 8?

This is: ?
(7+3t)/4 = -t/8
If it was the equation above do the following..
multiply both sides with 8 which gives you:
2(7+3t) = -t (get 2 due to (8/4 = 2))
14 + 6t = -t
6t + t = -14
t = -2

differentiation of exponential functions?

you have fraction, note that
[a/b]' = (a'b-b'a)/b^2
in your case a=x
b=e^x
as you know
x'=1
(e^x)' = e^x
so we get
(1*e^x - xe^x)/e^(2x)

x^2-14x +y^2-6y=6
(x-7)^2 +(y-3)^2 = 6+49+9 = 64 = 8^2
this is a circle centre (7,3) radius 8
y = 3 + 8 sin[theta]
x= 7+ 8 cos[theta]
E= 3(7+8cos( theta)) +4 (3 +8 sin[theta])
= 21 +24 cos (theta) + 12 +32 sin (theta)
= 33 +24 cos (theta)+ 32 sin(theta)
dE/ d (theta)= -24sin(theta) +32cos (theta)=0
32cos theta=24sin (theta)
tan (theta) = 32/24 = 4/3
theta = arctan(4/3)
E= 33 +24 cos (arctan(4/3)) + 32 sin(arctan(4/3)

For a cubic graph, how do you know if it goes below the x axis or above the x axis?

every cubic (or in general, every polynomial of odd order) crosses x-axis.
to find where that happens, you solve for y=0.
for example if you have cubic, it would be ax^3+bx^2+cx+d=0

Back pain help?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Don't trust those links. They look like virus links. Well it doesn't sound like something a medical Dr. could help you with. Maybe you should try a chiropractor. I've used them off and on my whole life and they have performed miracles on me.
Truthfully though, it just sounds like you are making your body do something that it's not really good for it. I don't know if you are in a circus or what, but just because your parents did it, doesn't mean it's right for you.
There is also at least one back stretching piece of equipment out there that might help you. Try this site for items you have seen on tv. The one I remember is you lay on your back and put your legs over it like it's a chair or something like that.
Well I can't find it on that site, but I'm still looking. This machine you would put your legs over it and it would automatically move your legs around. I'll keep looking for a while.

What is wrong with my calf?

About a month ago i kinda strained my calf. However it started poping throughout the month and feeling strained or pain. When im walking down stairs the calf pops and a tendon or something feels out of place and pops in again.
I had a meniscus repair in July. At first i thought it was my knee but it seems to be a muscle between the thigh and my upper side calf in the back of my leg.
Yes im seeing my doctor next week but i would like to see some other opinions first

How do you prevent/get rid of migraines?

Well first of all you have to find pain relief that will work. I've had headaches my entire life with perfect vision, but didn't even realize they were migraines until I got older and became sensitive to light and noise when I had one. Tylenol always worked for me but now that I'm older, I started just taking 1 or 2 aspirin laying down in a dark room without noise, and putting an ice cold rag on my forehead over and over again. I get almost instant relief from the cold rag and about 20 minutes later it is gone.
My Aunt strangely enough said coke in a bottle cured hers and the only way I can imagine that would work is if whatever is in the coke is what her body is experiencing withdrawal symptoms from.
In my opinion though, carbonated soft drinks are the worst thing you drink at any time but you could try it. They destroy Calcium & some people even use coke to wash clothes. I think I even heard you can clean a toilet with it. Of course if for some reason your body isn't processing calcium properly, I suppose that could help get rid of some of it for you.
Bottom line is everyone is different. If it's not your vision causing them then it's either something you are eating or a structural problem that requires a chiropractor. I've used chiropractors off and on my entire life. They performed miracles on me but they don't help everyone. All you can do is try different things. I'm thinking you could even get an oxygen bottle prescribed by a Dr. and maybe that would help.
Worst headache I ever had my entire life was when i was working in a business while they were redoing a flat roof with tar. Man that stuff is toxic. You don't have oil leaks on your car heating up and venting inside it do you?

How do you get the limit of x sin (1/x) as x approaches positive infinity?

As my colleague suggested, multiply the numerator and denominator by 1/x
Lim x >>inf xSin(1/x) = Lim x >>inf x(1/x)sin(1/x)/(1/x)
= Lim x>>inf sin(1/x)/(1/x) = Lim a>>0 sin(a)/a
This form of the limit now satisfies l'Hopital's rule's conditions
So your original limit is equal to Lim a>>0 cos(a)/1 = cos(0) = 1

Why is it called two real and equal roots b^2 - 4ac = 0 when the straight line touches the curve at one point?

b^2 - 4ac = 0, also defined as two real and equal roots (TWO ROOTS) but why for its graph, the U parabola or curve touches the line at only one point (ONE)
Two roots on one point? Senseless. But it will make sense when b^2 - 4ac > 0; two real and distinct roots; intersects at two points.

Is there a way to simplify the left hand-side of this algebra problem to solve for Y? ((60/s)/4)*60 = Y?

Well, I'm not sure how simplified you want it considering you have two variables in this equation. It seems you already did part of it with (60/s)*60 = 4y.
Just multiply 60*60 which = 3600 then divide by 4, which gives you 900s = Y
The other way you could do it was write it as (60/4s)*60 = Y
Just divide 60/4 = 15 then multiply by 60 to give you 900s = Y
I don't know what the value of s is or what the equation represents but that is probably as simplified as you are going to get without any more information.

Probability question help!?

Hey there,

I have been faced with this question and I am a little stuck:

An urn initially has one red ball. Persephone uses a device to select n blue balls with
probability (e^−x) x^n)/n!, for n = 0, 1, 2, . . . , and add them to the urn. She then selects
one ball at random from the urn. Show that the probability that she selects the red ball
is (1 − (e^-x) )/ x.
